In February of this year, my Son Tyler and I, went on a 10 day Photo trip to Costa Rica. We were part of a group of 12 avid photographers looking to snap off some legendary photos. The trip was wonderful! This is a trip my son and I had been talking about for several years and it finally became a reality. Check my gallery to see some of my favourite pictures from the trip.
While on the trip, it was nice to share this hobby with other photographers who had gear of all makes and models. My son had just purchased a new Nikon Z8 camera and was trying it out for the first time. I got a chance to try his camera and found it to be superior to my Fuji camera in certain ways. By the end of the 10 days, after heavy use of my Fuji, I was starting to question my decision to buy it in the first place. On one outing, due to a misused setting on my camera, I lost about 1200 images due to an exposure nightmare.
Here are some the headaches I encountered with the Fuji:
- In stills mode, the camera gave me an overheating warning on a few occasions. That has never happened before, and, It wasn't even hot on that particular day.
- Some settings in custom settings are global settings and so you must remember to change them when moving from one custom setting bank to another. This is how I lost 1200 photos.
- Due to my cropped sensor and slow lens (F8 at the long end), my ISO was sometimes through the roof. This led to some poor image quality. Now I knew about this going into the trip but it was exacerbated in the Costa Rica environment.
- Compared to my son's new Nikon camera, the Fuji's animal eye tracking was just not up to snuff. Of course, this results in a number of soft and unusable images.
So, when I returned from my trip and took a look at my images in Lightroom, I decided to sell my Fuji wildlife kit. So I'm in the market for a new kit.
